Role Summary

The Care Assistant reports directly to the Director of Nursing

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assist in delivering a high standard of holistic care to residents, promoting their equality and dignity at all times
  • To carry out assigned and delegated tasks involving direct care and all activities of daily living under the direction and supervision of the Director of Nursinge.g. washing, toileting, dressing, undressing, dining  and all other aspects of daily living
  •  Act as the named carer for specific residents as allocated by the Director of Nursing.
  •  Respect privacy and dignity of all residents and promote their independence
  •  Ensure all residents living areas and bedrooms are left neat and presentable for residents and visitors of Clarenbridge Nursing Home.
  • Contribute to the moving and treatment of residents to maximise physical comfort, utilising manual handling techniques. Provide particular attention to residents who have limited mobility.
  • Observe care plans and alert Nurses regarding any changes in the physical and mental state of the residents
  • Report immediately any incident or potential incident which may compromise the health and safety of residents or visitors.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe environment for the residents, staff and visitors of Clarenbridge Nursing Home
  • Communication with all residents and their family/friends. Ensure that all are made feel welcome and offered refreshments.
  • Know all residents by name.
  • Assist in the delivery of end of life care.
  • Answer the call bell promptly.
  • Contribute to the serving of resident meals, assisting residents to eat and drink as necessary
  • Escort residents when needed to travel externally
  • Comply with all policies and procedures relevant to job role including those that incorporate health and safety, infection control and waste disposal
  • Be willing to achieve FETAC level 5 - Health Care and undertake appointed ongoing training.
  • To undertake such other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Director of Nursing..
  • Be aware of the confidential nature of the work and in particular, the right of residents to confidentiality. To this end you will not discuss workings of the Home or its residents with people outside the Home

Qualifications
Essential

  • All newly recruited care staff and those in post less than one year commence training to FETAC Level 5 or equivalent within two years of taking up
  • Long standing care staff have their competency and skills assessed
Desirable
FETAC Level 5-  Care
 
Experience
Essential:
Previous experience with older people

Essential skills, competencies and/or knowledge

Professional knowledge.
Essential
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of older people
  • Previous experience in care of the elderly
  • Good literacy skills 

Core Aptitudes:
  • Act as a good role model
  • Must be of the caring nature, sympathetic to the needs of all the residents
  • Have good communication and interpersonal skills
