Role Summary

The physiotherapist should be able to demonstrate that they have developed clinical, communication and critical skills in relation to himherself and others. The Physiotherapist should be able to demonstrate increased clinical knowledge and skill, evaluative techniques and the ability to function effectively within a team, to the benefit of the patients.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Carry a clinical caseload appropriate to the post
  • Be responsible for client assessment, development and implementation of individualised treatment plans that are client centred and in line with best practice
  • Be responsible for goal setting in partnership with client, family and other team members as appropriate
  • Ensure that privacy and dignity of the patient is respected at all times.
  • Communicate and work in co-operation with other team members
  • Develop effective communication with and provide instruction, guidance and support to service users, family and carers. Maintain good communications with Consultants, General Practitioners and community care team members for early discharge and adequate follow-up.
  • Document client records in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies
  • Maintain an accurate record-keeping system to comply with legal requirements, to support clinical studies and to provide information for data collection.
  • Participate in review meetings, case conferences as appropriate.
  • Maintain professional standards of practice
  • Maintain quality standards of work and co-operate with quality assurance programmes
  • Work within own scope of professional competence in line with principles of best practice, professional conduct and clinical governance
  • Seek the advice of relevant personnel when appropriate / as required
  • Operate within the scope of practice of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists
  • Keep abreast with current changes in clinical practice by attending in-services, seminars, conferences and post-graduate courses.
  • Participate in weekend, bank holiday and on-call rota.
  • Attend team meetings when necessary.
  • Participate in performance review process with Director of Nursing.
Education & Training
  • Participate in mandatory training programmes
  • Take responsibility for, and keep up to date with Physiotherapy practice by participating in continuing professional development such as reflective practice, in service, self directed learning, research, clinical audit etc
  • Engage in performance management and personal development
  • Take part in teaching/training/supervision of staff and participate in the practice education of student therapists as and where appropriate and attend practice educator courses as relevant to role and needs
  • Actively participate in the improvement and development of Physiotherapy services by liasing with the Director of Nursing.
  • Keep records appropriate to his/her office as may be required. Gather and analyse statistics and participate in audits as directed by the Director of Nursing.
  • Participate in clinical audit activities to monitor clinical standards.
  • Read and act upon all issued staff policies.
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned to her/him by the Director of Nursing.
  • Represent the department at meetings and conferences as designated
  • Assist in ensuring that the Physiotherapy service makes the most efficient and effective use of developments in IT
  • Keep up to date with organisational developments within the Irish Health Service
  • Carry out other duties appropriate to the post as required from time to time by the Director of Nursing.
Information Technology
Have an interest and basic skills in computers. 

Health & Safety
  • Implement agreed policies, procedures and safe professional practice and adhere to relevant legislation, regulations and standards
  • Work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self and others. Ensure safe working environment for residents and report immediately any adverse incidents, near misses, accidents or injuries sustained by staff or residents.
  • Report any malfunctions or defects in equipment or any such suspicions immediately to the Director of Nursing.
  • Adhere to all Windmill Group health and safety requirements, and Health and Welfare at Work Act. Comply with the Physiotherapy Department policy regarding C.P.R and Moving and Handling training programmes.
  • To comply with the Windmill Group Safety Statements, Fire Safety and the Major Disaster Plan.

Note: these duties and responsibilities are a reflection of the present service requirements and may be subject to review and amendment to meet the changing needs of the Windmill Group.
